I had come into my office early on a Saturday morning to work on some computer and network related issues while our store was closed. If you have any issues with backups...lost data...not backing up ALL your computer info regularly you need to speak with Dan Dugal.. He is available 24/7....I don't think the guy sleeps! Every time I have called for his assistance he has answered the phone and walked me through everything.

I had trouble with my Outlook Express program...while trying to fix it, did something that totally erased all email data including the address book. This is data that most people probably don't even think about backing up daily. All I had to do was call Dan and we did a few mouse clicks and I was back in time with all my data recovered. A true time and life saver for me!

I wanted say thanks for the call. Your timing could not have been better when you called about your remote data back up service. I remember when you called, I didn't even let you finish your sales pitch. I just said how much? I knew the value of your service before ever using it.

Just a week or two before you called I had a virus attacked my server and one of my work stations. Of course this was nothing new. I figured it would be the same old routine, go to Symantec down load a cleaner and then a Microsoft a fix. Not this time.

Symantec's web site said the virus I had was not a wide spread or very harmful to my machine and only know to affect less that 100 machines that they know of. Lucky me. They had the fix but the problem was the virus had a script that would not allow Symantec to start up. Well after some very long hours and pain staking back ups I completed a manual virus clean.

Typically I would not have went through the hours of time involved in dealing with a virus like that. My common procedure is, if it is going to take more than a few hours, wipe the hard drive and start over. Unfortunately with this virus working in the back ground, my server was at a crawl and would not allow data through my network connections like it should have.

During the hours of sitting and thinking during the repair process I could not help thinking, I have known for a long time I need a off site data back up service, if I had only had an off site back up service. If I would had your service at that time I could have had my server wiped and up and running again just like before within a few hours.

I did have the experience to utilize your service for real the other day. I was trying to synch a Palm and it doubled my contact data base. I immediately thought time to try Dan's service out. This would give me a opportunity to try it with a real need but not in a devastating situation.

I have never really looked through the program to see how it works. I have only monitored the back up log from time to time. I have to say I was amazed at how intuitive it is. I think anyone can figure it out within a few minutes.

I transferred my entire data base folder content that I messed up to my desk top, just in case something went wrong I would still have the original to work with. I then selected the folder of my contact data in which I wanted to restore in your software program, 10 minutes later, everything was back to normal.

It could not have been any easier. Your program works great and the price is right.

A store owner explains how easy it is to use Windows Recovery, giving you the "most bang for your buck" and is a "no brainer" solution.

We used Norton Ghost in the past to support corporate IT networks and desktops. It is a great little tool for someone that is comfortable with technology. I don't believe that it is good solution for the average PostNet store owner, because it requires a lot of administrative overhead to manage the disk "images" (pictures). Unfortunately, it is only a partial solution.

The advantage of "Remote Data Backups" is that it makes the ENTIRE process a no-brainer. No more fumbling with Zip disks and wondering if your data is really safe or not. Select it, Schedule it and GO! Did you get a virus? How about just "rolling back" your system to the day right before your computer got afflicted? That's what Steve did using a feature called "Windows Recovery". I don't think there is another "solution" out there that solves a PostNet owner's backup problems better than RDB. Note that I said "solution", not "software". As a store owner, I don't want to purchase and install software, I want to implement a "solution".

It's Sunday evening on Labor Day Weekend and the President (Dan Dugal) of a PostNet Approved Vendor Remote Data Backups just called me at home from his house in Denver. Its 3 AM, do you know where your computer data is? Your contacts, your payroll information, your personal pictures (not those personal pictures, the family ones). You say they're sitting on your C: drive? You sure? Disaster comes in many forms; storms, hardware failure, power surges, fires, theft. No problem you say, I back up every night. Destroy my expensive piece of computer equipment! Throw my data to the wind! I HAVE THE BACK UP DISK! You cannot destroy me you say standing outside your shop with your arms outstretched holding your CD high in the air cursing at the wind, lightning and thunder dancing around your crazed head.

OK maybe that's a bit on the dramatic side but I cannot stress enough the importance of doing your backups. While most of the time, files can be recovered from systems with problems, if your hard disk physically fails, it is very nice to know your data is backed up on another medium. How can you make sure that your critical files are available if your disk fails? There are several methods of backup available to you for just such a situation. The most common are:

  • Diskette/Zip disk storage
  • CD-R(w) storage
  • Tape Backup Units
  • Remote Data Backups

The two types of backup that I would recommend for backups are CD-RW's and Remote Data Back-ups. CD-RW disks allow you to write multiple times to the same CD. Standard CD-R(W) disks can store 700 Megabytes of data. They are relatively inexpensive and require little time.

Remote Data Backups are another good alternative. Laura has tested this product at Moran and was very successful on recovering data with one of our computer crashes. For 100 MB of backup space the cost is $9.95 a month. This is a cost effective, secure, and convenient way to automatically back up your critical data every night. A successful backup of your MicroMaid (and Quickbooks) data will make your life MUCH EASIER in case of damage to your computer/s. Note that "successful" backup is the key word there have been cases where diligent franchisees were UNABLE TO RESTORE their essential applications because the backups were not useable e.g. files were not saved correctly, incorrect format, defective media.

The absolutely essential files to backup are:

MicroMaid_Tables
MicroMaid_Control
MicorMaid_CorpData

All three files are located in the MMWindows folder located on the M: drive. You can select to backup the entire MMWindows folder. If space is not an issue, you could backup the entire M: drive. We highly recommend keeping ONLY MicroMaid related files on the M: drive.

An important part of the backup is CHECKING the files to ensure they are useable in case of crisis. Once the backup is complete, go to the source of the backup (your cd/tape/offsite storage) and check the file type and size of the essential files (MicroMaid_Tables, MicroMaid_Control, MicroMaid_CorpData). The file type should be MicroMaid Access; the size of the files on the backup source should be the SAME as the files in your M: drive.

Taking your backups off-site is just as important as creating them. If you make a backup and leave it in your office, there may be a risk of loss through:

  • Fire
  • Flood
  • Earthquake
  • Other Natural Disasters.
  • Theft

Taking steps to protect and preserve your data will help to keep you in business!

To assist all franchisees in performing regular backups that are stored off-site, we would like to encourage you to consider a company called "Remote Data Backups". This message is primarily for franchisees that are NOT NSC users.  However, NSC users may find the information useful if they wish to backup vital files such as Quickbooks.

Unfortunately it happens at least once a year......we receive contact from a devastated franchisee whose computer has crashed.  We assure the franchisee that we'll have them up and running in less than an hour.  All we have to do is re-install MicroMaid and then restore files from their backup.  There is a sense of relief from the franchisee.

The scenario above is the "good" one.  However, each year the "not so good" scenario occurs:

MicroMaid is installed and the franchisee inserts the backup media.  We provide direction on which files to locate.....the franchisee can't find those exact files, they have some with "similar" names but not the ones we're asking for.  At this point reality hits, the franchisee doesn't have a "good" backup.....except for the one from 6 months ago.


As much as we want to "save" a franchisee's MicroMaid and restore it to the same condition it was in prior to the computer crash, we can only do that IF A GOOD BACK UP exists. 

While we promote local backups using CD/DVD/Tape, we also encourage franchisees to leverage a "Remote Backup" service.  When it comes to "disaster recovery", two sources is better than one.  What would you do if the backup CD was lost or damaged?

For anyone who is considering this service, or not considering it, let me give you a little advice - take it. The incredible cost of trying to recreate your hard drive and all of its data is all too familiar to me. I had a lightning strike at my home, and lost my hard drive. At that time I was working out of my home, and had all my business info on that computer. I unfortunately had not backed up in over six months, and am still trying to recreate the lost info.

I went ahead and downloaded the trial of the 10GB remote data backup service yesterday. I did it through the CMIT link you emailed me, and I put your name where it asked me for an affiliate name at one point. Let me know if I need to do anything else to get you credit for it.

As it turns out, my whole hard drive does fit in the 10GB allotment with room to spare for more data. I started the initial backup yesterday afternoon and let it go overnight. It finished this morning and my whole machine is backed up. I did an incremental backup after doing some work on the computer, and was very pleased to see that it only took a few minutes to update. I will be backing up in the middle of the night daily, so I anticipate the program being almost totally transparent to me.

I can't tell you how pleased I am with it so far. It is MUCH better than Xdrive. The user interface is simple and intuitive, and I had no problems uploading or downloading files between my computer and the remote storage server. There is some really smart functionality there between the nifty data compression, automatic detection of files that have changed and need updating, etc. It even recognizes common parts of the operating system and gets them from their servers rather than taking more time to get redundant information off of my machine.
